Summer's Brother — episode cover

Summer’s Brother did not really start as a finished band. It sounds more like something that kept building into itself.

In this episode, Connor talks about how the project came together over a few years, through different lineups, different recordings, and songs that slowly helped define what Summer’s Brother actually was. That gives their EP Class Clown a bit more weight too, and shows how the project gradually found its shape.

A lot of that seems tied to recording. Connor talks about how working with Andy Schichter at Park Sound Studio opened things up, not just in terms of sound, but confidence too. There is room to try things, mess around, and follow ideas a bit further. Andy also shared in the interview how he saw that shift between the earlier version of the project and the point where the band had a clearer sense of itself.

We also got into songwriting, and how sometimes Connor brings in a framework and the band builds from there. Now that the lineup feels more settled, they are also starting to jam more in the room and let songs come together that way. It sounds like Summer’s Brother is still open, still changing, still evolving, but with a stronger centre than before.

The part I enjoyed most was hearing Connor talk about “Sweeter Dream,” which is one of my favourites of theirs, and the story behind how the lyrics came about. Not in some big dramatic way, but in how the song came together while they were recording it, and how part of the idea came from trying to be there for someone going through a rough time.

When I caught them for the interview, they were wrapping up their single “Solid Ground,” which opens up something else too. Connor talks about authenticity, performance, and the weird tension of trying to be yourself while also stepping into something bigger on stage. It makes the band feel less like a fixed idea and more like a project that is still opening up in real time.

This episode is not about a band arriving fully formed. It is more about hearing how Summer’s Brother got here, and what might be opening up next.
