The Zummers — episode cover

The Zummers are a four-piece out of Pemberton, B.C., and this episode ended up being less about “the new album” in the usual sense, and more about the chapter of the band that the album ended up holding onto.

That was the part that stood out most to me.

In our conversation, they talked about how quickly things started clicking. A couple of early wins helped (two battle of the bands), but what really comes through is that they already felt the chemistry. The songs were showing up fast, the writing felt natural, and before long, they had enough material to realize this was turning into something real.

That carries through Distracted.

What I liked about the conversation is that it never stayed at the level of broad band talk. They got into how songs changed once the whole group touched them. A track like “Pour No More” became a good example of that. It started one way, then opened up into something that felt bigger than any one person’s version of it. That says a lot about what kind of band they are becoming.

There was also a nice moment where they talked about a first record not needing to say everything. Sometimes it just captures one chapter well. That feels like the right way to hear Distracted. Not as a final statement, but as a strong document of the band’s starting period.

And that’s probably why the episode works for me. You can hear the excitement of a young band, but you can also hear the shape of something forming. Not polished into one fixed identity yet, and better for it.
